Mission Viejo High School’s production of Oklahoma! delivered a vibrant and heartfelt celebration of one of musical theatre’s most beloved classics. Set in the Oklahoma Territory of 1906, the story follows the romance between Curly and Laurey while exploring themes of community, love, jealousy, and the changing American frontier. Through energetic performances, stunning technical execution, and a deep commitment to storytelling, this production brought new life to a timeless musical.
From the moment the curtain rose, audiences were transported to the golden horizons of rural Oklahoma. Tristan Fordham immediately captivated the audience as Curly, opening the show with rich, resonant vocals that not only painted a picture of a beautiful morning but immersed the audience in the warmth and optimism of the Oklahoma Territory. His commanding stage presence and vocal confidence established the tone for an evening filled with charm and authenticity.
The production's choreography was one of its greatest strengths, seamlessly blending scenes together and allowing the story to flow effortlessly from moment to moment. Leading the charge was Jayden Harville, whose breathtaking dance ability dazzled throughout the production. As the featured male dancer in every major dance sequence, Harville leapt across the stage with remarkable athleticism, grace, and precision, creating countless memorable moments.
The show's impressive ensemble elevated every scene. Max McPhearson maximized every second on stage through consistent character work and impeccable comedic timing, while Claire Vanginkle nearly stole the show as Gertie, earning laughter after laughter with her infectious cackle and vibrant personality. Myrra Uppuluri perfectly embodied Ado Annie, balancing wide-eyed innocence with irresistible comedic charm. Her powerhouse vocals consistently wowed the audience and brought tremendous heart to the role. Summaya Siddiqui anchored the production as Aunt Eller, providing warmth, wisdom, and exceptional comedic timing that helped carry the show from beginning to end.
One of the evening's most impressive accomplishments came from Jaden Carbonel, who adapted to new choreography and staging following a recent injury. Despite performing on crutches due to a twisted ankle, Carbonel's determination never wavered. Watching him tap dance on one foot was nothing short of inspiring and a testament to his dedication as a performer.
Liam O'Rourke delivered a chilling and unforgettable portrayal of Jud. His subtle physical choices, particularly the nervous twitches that emerged whenever the character felt threatened, created an unsettling presence that kept audiences on edge. Combined with powerful vocals, O'Rourke offered a refreshingly nuanced interpretation of the classic antagonist.
Behind the scenes, the technical team demonstrated extraordinary craftsmanship. Student lighting technician Mark Rainy infused the production with magic through elegant lighting effects across the cyc, particularly during the breathtaking fourteen-minute dream ballet. Kori Sandford's expertise as dramaturg and prop master ensured every detail felt authentic to the world of 1906 Oklahoma. Sound designer Elora Mahn exemplified true excellence, creating a seamless audio experience that allowed audiences to focus entirely on the story. Meanwhile, stage manager Macy Thomson and her team flawlessly executed more than 200 cues, maintaining the production's remarkable pace and fluidity.
